‘Bull’ episode 11 review: Bull gets creative in ‘Teacher’s Pet’

Bull -For the latest episode of “Bull” on CBS, we had a case that can be described with one word and one word only: Complicated. This was one of the trickier cases for Jason Bull to operate, if for no other reason than that the implications were vast.

The plaintiffs – At the request of a colleague, Bull got involved with a civil suit filed by two parents against their son’s teacher Susan, one who was in an inappropriate relationship with their son … who just so happened to be one of her students. The problem that compounded this was that Jordan, the student, was taking his new girlfriend’s side over the parents. Because he was 17 (the age of consent in New York), there was no way to go after her criminally — therefore, this suit was the best option that the parents had to get back at her.

The first issue Bull faced was finding a jury that would sympathize with the plight of the parents, and realize that this woman was a predator out to assert some sort of control and feel dominant over someone else. What made matters so much worse is that she seemed to have a smart legal answer for every question — she was home-schooling him, for example, and had the records to prove it.

The twist enters the picture – Well, there is one thing that Susan still was trying to hide in the trial, and that was proof that she was expecting a child. This was bad, but when it turned out that she was four months along, this was even worse — it could mean that she had sex with him when he was 16, which was a crime in New York. This was their way in which to get to her … or so they thought. When she said that it child wasn’t Jordan’s, this was a huge hole in the parents’ case. What made matters worse was that Edward, one of the jurors that they thought was on their side, was actually far more morally ambiguous than they first thought.

The search for resolution – After Susan’s ex learned that the baby could be his, that complicated things given that he wanted custody, of course, of the child. Bull theorized that this would cause the teacher and her beau to flee, and that’s what they attempted to do. This is when Bull was able to make his move, finding the two parties, informing Susan that she broke the law taking a minor across the border, and then forcing her to hear him out. All of a sudden, he had his angle, and he pounced on it. This was all that Bull needed in order to win her over, and start to let Jordan go.

One effective move in this episode not having resolution in the form of a verdict in court — instead, Jason managed to figure out a way to resolve this using his skills and that alone.

Overall – This may not have been the flashiest case this season, but in terms of twists and turns, this was one of the better ones. Bull managed to get through to a woman who didn’t want to hear him out. Another great performance by Michael Weatherly anchored the hour, but kudos also have to go out to Willa Fitzgerald, who gave a really great performance that was different than anything that we saw from her on “Scream.” Episode Grade: A-.
