‘NCIS’ season 14, episode 12 preview: Where in the world is Agent Gibbs?
There is a reason why Tuesday night’s new episode of “NCIS” is entitled “Off the Grid,” and much of it stems from the fact that we’re going to be seeing the character of Gibbs do something that he rarely ever does — take off without telling anyone in advance where he’s been or what he is up to. (Hey, the episode is called “Off the Grid” for a reason.)

We’d tell you to watch the sneak peeks below, since they set up what is the structure of this episode: Mark Harmon’s character taking off, and then everyone else on the team bracing to find him. They’re right to be worried, given that this is an extremely challenging job, one that makes you an almost-instant target no matter what you do. You’ve put away so many bad guys if you’re someone like Gibbs that it is fair to make the assumption that in turn, some bad guys are going to want to turn around and do some rather-terrible things to you … at least for the ones who are still out.
As it turns out, Gibbs is okay — and he’s gone off the grid for a good reason. He spotted the brother of someone on the top of the NCIS’ most-wanted list, so he is looking at this moment as an opportunity to get closer to the guy and bust him once and for all. He assumes an alter ego, tries putting on a militia act, and then makes a move here or there when he thinks that he can to reach back to the team. This is why they get a call from him at a gas station — he wasn’t able to stick around long enough to chat with them, but he was smart enough to know that McGee would follow up, call back the woman whose cell phone he borrowed to call, and use her to figure out that Gibbs tried to reach out. This is where all of those years working with somebody paid off!
While it doesn’t seem as though this episode’s building directly off of what happened to Qasim at the end of the installment prior, there’s still quite a bit to dive into and enjoy here. If nothing else, it’s a change of pace for Gibbs that shows off a different skill set.
