‘Elementary’ season 5, episode 12 preview: A dead clown in the woods

Elementary -Is Sunday night’s new episode of “Elementary” taking a ripped-from-the-headlines approach to their case? Maybe if you are considering the headlines around Halloween, the answer there could be “yes.” There was a time, after all, when there were stories aplenty about there being some sort of psychotic clowns hiding out in the woods and coming after children. These tales were weird and disturbing … and for the most part debunked. There were a couple of real cases out there, but we found that many of them were people just doing it after hearing about the fake stories on the internet. We could draw some analogies here about people following fake news and then treating it like gospel, but it’s a TV site! No need to dive too deep into the political nonsense here.

Sunday night’s new episode (airing after “Madam Secretary”) entitled “Crowned Clown, Downtown Brown” will begin effectively with a dead clown out in the woods — strangely, this is not the first time that Holmes has investigated the murder of a clown. Did he secretly serve as a private investigator in the circus before this? He’s going to be tasked as always with finding answers, but this particular case could prove to be more challenging than he ever imagined that it could be given that a weaponized virus, one originating in an unusual place, could end up being at the center of the story.

Only on “Elementary” are you going to see something go from “American Horror Story: Freak Show” to a Richard Preston novel over the course of an hour, but that seems to be what’s happening here. The moment you here the words “weaponized virus” thrown out there, you’re going to have a sense of urgency that spawns out of that immediately. It’s still to be seen precisely what the implications of this are, but don’t you have to assume the worst in a situation like this?

What’s your take on the case at the heart of tonight’s new episode? Share now in the comments! In between “Elementary” and the finale of “Sherlock” today, all signs are pointing to this being a banner 24 hours for one of our favorite fictional detectives.
