‘Call the Midwife’ season 6, episode 1 synopsis: A change at the top; Shelagh’s secret

Shelagh -

Tonight, BBC One is airing what is in some ways a preview special for “Call the Midwife” season 6 in “The Casebook,” which is going to be an interesting look back at some of the real women who were midwives during the 1960’s. In addition to that, you’re also going to get a chance to take a further look at the show behind the scenes and get an interview with writer Heidi Thomas. If you’re a super-fan of this show, it’s a nice way to set up the story proper.

Next week, your favorite midwives are going to return in proper to BBC One, and the official synopsis that was released recently details that there is going to be a wide array of interesting events coming up. There’s a significant shift when it comes to the leadership at the top of Nonnatus, and there are some issues that will serve as distractions from work for a few characters.

“The midwives receive a rapturous and warm welcome home from their South African adventure but all is not well at Nonnatus House. In their absence, Sister Ursula has been running a very tight ship and it is quickly announced that she will remain in charge at Nonnatus House, above Sisiter Julienne.

“The midwives are drawn into helping Trudy, a heavily pregnant mother whose husband has just been released from prison for extortion. Gradually, the problems below the surface of their marriage become clear. Trapped and with no clear way out, Trudy’s suffering sends shock waves through Nonnatus House, most noticeably affecting Sister Mary Cynthia who is experiencing increased anxiety following her recent attack.

“Elsewhere, Shelagh harbours a secret and struggles to tell Dr Turner, and Patsy receives some distressing news about her father in Hong Kong.”

The first cause for celebration here is that Patsy is going to have a substantial story, even if it is a rather difficult story to hear about given that it involves a family member. This character was absent by and large for the Christmas Special, as we presume that there had to be someone to stay back and look after things in Poplar while the other midwives took off to South Africa.

As for Shelagh’s secret, why wouldn’t she tell her husband the truth about whatever is going on? This makes us think that it must be something fairly substantial, given that it’s hard to imagine her keeping something silly a secret from him given everything that the two parties have been through already since the start of the series.
