‘Gotham’ season 3, episode 12 preview: Oswald sees a ghost

Oswald -

There’s a reason that Monday night’s winter premiere of “Gotham‘ is entitled “Ghosts,” and you get a good sense of it in the new sneak peek below.

This clip is featured largely on Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), a man who may think that some things in his life are going rather well at present. He’s the Mayor of Gotham, he holds all the power, and he thinks that his relationship with Edward Nygma is far better than it is in actuality. He’s unaware of the secret deal the Riddler’s crafted with Barbara Kean … or at least he was unaware. Maybe his subconscious is giving him a little more of something to be afraid of judging from a certain apparition’s cameo appearance.

Somehow, Paul Reubens is back! It’s a thrill that we’re getting a chance to see Oswald’s father Elijah van Dahl again, even if it is in this sort of ghostly state. Elijah warns his son in the midst of his fear that not all is as it seems, and maybe this gives Oswald more of a heightened sense of insecurity. Given the innate desire for love and companionship the character has within his core, it’s hard to imagine him discarding something like this completely. How he chooses to manifest and interpret said warning is a part of the fun for his story moving forward.

Notice that this episode is entitled “Ghosts” rather than just “Ghost” — another one is going to be coming in the form of Jerome. Is he really dead? That’s a question the show and Cameron Monaghan both want you to be asking; last we saw the guy, though, it didn’t really look like it was in question. This is a show where one way or another, people rarely die — even if their flesh is gone, they find ways to live on emotionally, psychologically, or of course with the help of Hugo Strange.
