‘Twin Peaks’ premiere date for Showtime (finally) revealed

Twin Peaks -Sunday, May 21. We feel like you’ve been waiting long enough to get some more news when it comes to “Twin Peaks,” so we don’t feel the need to force you into reading more of this article if that’s the answer you are searching for.

Today while at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Showtime head David Nevins finally confirmed the launch date for the revival of the classic series, written by Mark Frost and directed by David Lynch. There are eighteen episodes in total, and he (per Entertainment Weekly) had this to say as a rather tantalizing teaser for what is coming up:

“We’ve seen the whole thing … David Lynch is one of the great film masters of my lifetime. I think this is the pure heroin version of David Lynch and I’m excited to put it out.”

In other words, this is probably awesome. Showtime is playing a nasty game with our heart in making us wait until May for it. There are still many other details still to be revealed. We know that we’re getting a two-hour premiere, but at the same time it’s not clear if there are going to be batches of the episodes airing across a couple of years, or if we’re going to get a straight show that runs for most of the summer. Right now, our bet is more of the former; this show is effectively taking the spot of “Penny Dreadful,” which ended its third and final season last year in what was considered by many people to be a surprise.

What we do know is that the revival is going to continue the story of the original acclaimed series, and feature many of the stars from it coupled with a wide array of new talent. The cast is enormous, and filming was done with the highest degree of secrecy. This, next to maybe “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” is one of the most mysterious productions that we’ve seen in our almost eight years of covering television.
