Golden Globes 2017: In Memoriam honors Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds

Globes -

The In Memoriam segment of many awards shows is an emotional one, but we somehow still felt as though the Golden Globes this year was going to be more powerful than ever due to the sheer magnitude of the people we lost.

For the Globes tonight, we specifically saw them take a moment to recognize in particular the lives of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, two Hollywood icons who both passed away over the course of the past few weeks. The show played a brief video showing some of their screen highlights, and they were introduced by a clearly-emotional host Jimmy Fallon. The fact that he was still choking up over this just shows still the tremendous impact that these two women had on him and so many others.

For those wondering if the awards show will have a lengthier In Memoriam segment coming over the course of the night, it’s not really a tradition for this show — in other words, we doubt it. They tend to allow the Oscars, the Emmys, and the SAG Awards handle these duties. We figure that they broke tradition this year out of necessity, given that the deaths of Fisher and Reynolds are still so fresh in the minds of many, and the impact that they had across multiple generations is so enormous and really without measure. You can look at “Star Wars” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” or with Fisher you can look at all of the work that she put in as a writer over time.

If you want to remember the two women further, we recommend that you go and check out “Bright Lights.” The HBO documentary last night was incredibly well-received, and offered a raw, honest, and at times funny depiction of their work and their lives together.
