‘The 100’ season 4 spoilers: What are the characters facing?

The 100 -

The fourth season of “The 100” is not too far away now from its big premiere on The CW on February 1, and with that, there are a lot of different stories to look forward to. With a vast nuclear threat and only 6 months to figure out a solution before everyone is dead, it’s hard for any character out there to have some degree of hope, but that’s what makes this show as good as it is: Faced with impending doom, we see how people can still work together for a better future – even if there are a few troublemakers thrown into the mix.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about some of the specific thematic challenges for what is coming up, executive producer Jason Rothenberg had the following message to pass along:

“If you can’t stop the end of the world, how can you find hope? … Some people will cling to their loved ones, some people will fight to their last breath, and some people are just done fighting.”

This is the sort of crisis that could strip everyone down to the simplest core of their humanity, where they don’t have a whole lot left other than to contemplate some of the most basic elements of who they are, what they want, and how they want to fight moving forward into the future… if there is one. Seeing this story develop is going to be incredibly compelling just from the standpoint of potentially seeing someone outside of Clarke rise up in a leadership role. Clarke has been through the wringer on this show and as strong as she is, everyone has their breaking point. It would be interesting to us to see what Clarke would be like if she’ has reached that point of hopelessness and her struggle to get back into a leadership position.

The unfortunate thing about the story of these characters coming up is that this particular threat is going to be far from the only struggle that we see these people face. After all, this is a show that constantly produces a feeling that the walls are closing in on its heroes. One step forward, two steps back.
