‘The Walking Dead’ season 7 debate: Why not just leave?

twdTonight, there is once again no new episode of “The Walking Dead” airing on AMC, but we of course do think that there is a rather sensible reason for that: After all, it’s Christmas Day! Nobody wants to air new episodes of anything against that level of competition, and it’s pretty darn easy to understand why.

The question that we want to ask in the span of this article is actually a rather simply one: Why not just leave? Seriously. Why in the world do you want to continue to put up with the nonsense of Negan given everything that he’s done?

Here is a further way to think about this question. Many seasons ago, we saw the characters make the decision to leave Hershel’s Farm; then, we saw them leave the prison; then, we saw them leave Terminus. Whenever there is no longer a reason to stay, they leave. Why do things differently at this point? While you do have people like Carol and Morgan still elsewhere, couldn’t you round up Alexandria and some of the Hilltop folks and take off? The Saviors seem to far outnumber Rick’s crew both in terms of numbers and resources, and it feels hard to think they will survive here without losing a few people along the way.

The “why not leave?” question is probably the one that bugged us the most throughout the first part of the season, perhaps at times even more so than why in the world the pacing was so slow. Think about how enormous a world this is, and how there could still be some safe havens out there. There could be an island or two that these people could find that is relatively uninhabited, or a few buildings somewhere that could be safe. They’ve rebuilt so many times before, so getting out of Negan’s jurisdiction may be the best way ensure their safety.

Sure, there are likely some more terrible characters out there quite like him, but you never know: There may also be some who are far more warm and welcoming.

Ultimately, we understand why this move would make some believe that Rick and company were cowards if they made this move; yet, it’d probably be more realistic than anything else that they are doing.
