‘Elementary’ season 5, episode 10 reaction: Sherlock makes Shinwell an offer

Elementary -Through most of Sunday night’s “Elementary” episode (the last one of 2016), we had a chance to see a wide array of different things take place. For example, Joan had to clear her name when it comes to a prescription drug ring that was using forgeries in order to pass along everything it wanted and then some. This caused her in part to revisit some of her own past.

Meanwhile, there was more tension regarding what to do with Shinwell following what happened last week, where Sherlock went to extreme lengths in order to ensure that he was safe, only to see him get somewhat mixed up with the wrong people again tonight. Luckily, it feels as though Sherlock, Watson, and the show as a whole have now figured out the best way possible in order to use this character, and that is as some sort of informant. He can go out into the field, get information that Holmes and Watson cannot get, and then bring it back. He’s got skills and resources that neither of them present.

Unfortunately, we figure that part of the problem for these two is going to come in the form of making sure he is properly trained. After all, just because he has the skills doesn’t mean he’s got the experience, and this is probably going to be tiresome given that it’s extra work on their plate.

From a show perspective, we like the move just because it opens the doors for some other storytelling possibilities where they have another person involved in some select cases. It doesn’t really change so much what Holmes and Watson do so much as it is just an extension of it. Plus, we’ve always appreciated Nelsan Ellis and our philosophy there is to figure out as many interesting uses for him as humanly possible.

Now, we unfortunately have to wait until January in order to see how some of this training is going to go.
