‘Saturday Night Live’ with Emma Stone, Shawn Mendes drops in live ratings; up versus 2015
There is some good news and bad news coming out this morning in regards to the ratings performance of one “Saturday Night Live.” Where do we go from here?
Let’s start with what we firmly consider to be the good news: The series is up in the ratings versus 2015! With a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the episode hosted by Emma Stone can boast that it still had a reasonably strong impact on the night. There are several shows from the past week that didn’t get anywhere near this sort of performance and it should be commended for that.
Now, we turn things around to the not-so-great news: This rating still marks one of the lowest outputs of the season, though that’s hardly a surprise when you consider one of the classic rules of this show: If there is significant news happening, it is dominant in the numbers. If there’s not significant news happening for the show to properly mock, it tends to struggle a little bit more. The same is true anyone comes out of an election.
If there is one thing in particular that “SNL” has going for it, it is the increased willingness of Alec Baldwin to continue to come out to play Donald Trump. Much of this may be due to the fact that his performance is so lauded, but another part of it is that we think there’s probably a part of him that enjoys riling up the President-elect so much that he tweets about how supposedly terrible he is every time that he appears on the show. (Baldwin claimed that he would stop the impersonation if Trump ever releases his tax returns, which Alec probably knows that he’s not going to ever do given that he hadn’t done it to this point.)
