Which ‘Call the Midwife’ star got engaged while filming Christmas Special?

Call the Midwife -

Mrs. Carter: Christmas is a romantic time of year, and apparently, that can even be true even when it’s technically the summer!

Earlier this year, the cast and crew of “Call the Midwife” were all the way in South Africa in order to film their Christmas Special, and it is one that had quite a surprising end (off-set) as Victoria Yeates, who plays Sister Winifred on the BBC series, ended up getting engaged to her boyfriend Paul Housden. As she told the Mirror, the proposal began when Housden stalled by taking a series of photos of her:

“[We stopped at a ] beautiful little cafe, [and he] was taking his time but it was just because he was getting the guts to propose.

“I ended up saying, ‘Enough. No more photos!’ And he said, ‘I’ve got a question to ask.’ I said, ‘What is it?’ I was scared that if we stayed in the area too long, baboons would come, you see. And that’s when he said, ‘Will you marry me?’”

After it happened, the actress went and informed the remainder of her cast-mates about the great news which we suspect would be followed up with much celebration.

Hopefully, the Christmas Special coming up will deliver the same sort of grand celebration, though we must admit that we are not altogether optimistic about this prospect given that we’ve seen many times that this show tends to go in more of a bittersweet, realistic direction. There will be moments of happiness, but they will be offset with moments of sadness and also pain as the women of Nonnatus House travel all the way to South Africa in hopes of giving the people there a better life.
