‘How to Get Away with Murder’ season 3: Boss explains flash-forward confusion

HTGAWM -At around the time the winter finale of “How to Get Away with Murder” aired, there were only a handful of real contenders in terms of who was going to be found dead under the sheet. for several weeks Frank was our lead candidate, and that remained, but we were starting to think that it could be Nate just because Frank was more obvious. In our mind, the majority of the other men who mattered were already written off as possibilities, and it’d already been confirmed that the deceased party was in fact a man.

So to see Wes be the dead character at the end of the winter finale was stunning, given that we’d already seen flash-forwards of him moving forward with the D.A. in order to potentially turn on Annalise Keating. It wasn’t until later that we learned that this actually took place before we got around to the fire and not at the same time.

In speaking towards this time-confusion and some criticism of some fans who felt like the show deliberately tricked them, creator Pete Nowalk made it clear to Entertainment Weekly that a big goal of the show this time around was to keep many people on their toes:

“I understand if people will be upset. Part of the DNA of the show is that we’re always playing with time … Nothing is hard and fast when you watch it. You don’t know where it is in place and time until we tell you. To me, that’s the fun of the show, the ride of it.”

In the end, the show probably did the right thing if their ultimate goal at the end of the series was trying to blow everyone out of the water with this choice. Yet, at the same exact time they are going to have to continue to up the ante when it comes to great stories if they want to compensate for losing someone believed to be one of their biggest, most-popular characters.
