‘The Walking Dead’ leads to surge in ‘Easy Street’ sales on iTunes

Dwight -Sure, the song “Easy Street” by The Collapsable Hearts Club was used as a torture device through much of Sunday night’s new episode of “The Walking Dead” season 7, but that clearly hasn’t quite caused people to avoid buying it online. As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite.

As of this writing around 10:30 a.m. Pacific time on Monday, the song is sitting pretty at #44 on the iTunes top 100 chart, ahead of songs from such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Drake, and Luke Bryan. It’s even ahead of “Daddy Lessons” by Beyonce, a song that got a lot of attention because of a Dixie Chicks collaboration at the CMA Awards this past week. Clearly, the catchiness of the song stuck with viewers more so than the device in which it was used for.

When this episode was being filmed, all indications we’ve seen were that there was not a definite song even chosen yet for those scenes, and one of the issues we imagine production running into was one of clearance: There aren’t too many artists, especially those recording happy songs, who probably want their music associated with something terrible. It’s like a fast-food restaurant marketing themselves for having terrifying clowns who pop in and scare people every thirty minutes.

Yet, there are some people who like to be scared by terrifying clowns, just as there are people who like songs associated with Daryl Dixon’s misery. That’s why licensing this song was clearly a smart move for The Collapsable Hearts Club, who seem to intentionally be misspelling “collapsible” that way, to clear the song for the show. It at least has people talking, and sometimes that’s a victory in itself. (For those wondering, the group seems to be a collaboration between Petra Haden, Jim Bianco, and Brad Gordon on the horns.)

For those wondering, we’ve got the link below via Bianco for those of you with an interest in picking up the song.
