‘Dancing with the Stars 23’: Controversy and comments with Amber Rose, Julianne Hough
Feuds between “Dancing with the Stars” contestants / pros have been a part of the show for years, and sometimes they are petty and not particularly newsworthy. However, at the same time we do think it’s a little bit different when you are talking about a series of comments with the words “body shamed” thrown in there.
Things started after the show on Tuesday, where Amber said on her latest “Loveline with Amber Rose” the following about comments that Julianne Hough made about her performance with Maksim Chmerkovskiy:
“Last night was like, they did the commentary, and I, it was a point in the dance where I had to lift my leg up and Maks dipped me and [Hough] said, ‘oh, I’m uncomfortable,’ and instantly I felt, I did feel body-shamed … You know, all the beautiful professional dancers that are on [the show], I mean they dress very sexy and they do the splits and they grind up on these guys and they look absolutely stunning and get a standing ovation.”
Julianne, meanwhile, has come out and told E! News that her response as framed on the show came about as a result of editing, and is being misinterpreted as something different:
“To be clear, that was a produced package, not live coverage and they can put those sound bites anywhere. My ‘uncomfortable’ comment was about the fact that I felt like I wanted more out of the performance — when someone is doing a hot, sexy dance like that without the right amount of energy that is required, it can be uncomfortable to watch … Trust me I’m ALL for a sexy booty dance!! We all know that!! And any kind of body shaming goes against everything I believe in.”
Ultimately, we’re not going to wade into the waters of intention from either party, mostly because our job here is to simply state what the perspectives are. With that said, we do feel like Amber has been slightly under-scored throughout the season so far. We don’t necessarily think she should be near the top of the leaderboard, but her point totals have not been that far off from Rick Perry — and she’s a far better dancer than he was.
