Simon Fuller jokes about ‘American Idol’ return at Creative Arts Emmys

The news -

While “American Idol” was never much of an Emmy darling during the time in which the show was on the air, it managed to score a little bit of love while at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday. Not only that, but original series creator Simon Fuller jumped at the opportunity to discuss a potential return for the series — even in jest.

Specifically, he had the following to say while accepting the award, ironically right next to Fox Television Group Chairman / CEO Dana Walden:

“Thank you for bringing the show back in 2018 … We can’t wait to make it.”

A representative for Fox confirmed to Variety that there are no plans at present to bring the show back next year, so clearly this was all in good fun. With that said, it is worth thinking about.

While “American Idol” in its later years was a shell of its former self, remember here that it ended at a time when there was vast singing-show fatigue. Now, “The Voice” is the only pure singing show out there, and who knows? That show likely has a shelf life of its own, and everyone will eventually move on from it as well. Eventually, there could be a time where there is a thirst again for this genre of television, and Fox could be there to make it. We don’t think it would ever get 20 million viewers or more again, but even if it was just a solid entry in a lineup (and would pay its judges a little less), a revival could be worth considering.
