‘The Last Ship’ season 3 finale reaction: Show exec on Chandler’s big decision

Last Ship -

The third season of “The Last Ship” came and went on TNT Sunday night, and it did so with a variety of big moves and overtures. One of the biggest ones just so happened to be seeing the character of Chandler opt to take off from the Nathan James after the death of Tex and also what happened to Shaw. He has been a strong, capable leader, but at the same exact time he also found himself in a position where he started to realize that there was nothing more he could offer, and the guilt from so many deaths was taking a mental toll.

With that, Slattery is taking over, but for how long? That’s something we will have to wait until season 4 in order to figure out.

For the time being, we can at least talk more about the immediate future for Eric Dane’s character. Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Steven Kane had the following to say about this move, and what it could mean for the show and this character moving forward:

“We felt that in many ways the season was about the price of leadership, and we thought that of all the characters who could have had some sort of breakdown or just felt the most burden, it would be Chandler. He has been there for everybody else and hasn’t really had a shoulder to cry on or a person to talk to, aside from a few trusted advisors, but he kind of says it himself: ‘The world keeps falling apart and we keep having to fix it.’ He began the season as this icon on a wall, a meme for everyone to see as ‘the most famous man in the world,’ someone who just wants to serve, and we wanted to take him through this journey where by the end he sort of crosses the line for himself and says, ‘I need a break.’

“We gave a lot of closure in the season, a lot of things are wrapped up and there’s basically a happy ending, so we thought it’d be great to sort of leave Chandler in a place where you wonder, ‘Where’s he going to be next time you see him, when we come back for Season 4? And can he ever get back that feeling he had that allowed him to stay this rock for everybody for three seasons?'”

Given that we still have two more seasons of “The Last Ship” on the map, we’ve got plenty of opportunities to see how the series will move forward.
