Emmys 2016: Should Ty Burrell, Louie Anderson, or Keegan-Michael Key win Supporting Actor in a Comedy?

Due to ties or narrow votes, sometimes the Television Academy does end up expanding their field of nominees from six to seven, and that is precisely what is happening in the Emmy category for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

In terms of the nominees this time around, you’ve got a ton of talent, some familiar faces, and also a few newcomers to the race. This may be one of the more well-rounded fields we’ve had a chance to see in this category in some time, really to the point where it’s hard to pinpoint precisely who voters will go for.

The nominees

Louie Anderson, “Baskets” (FX)

Andre Braugher, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Tituss Burgess, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)

Ty Burrell, “Modern Family” (ABC)

Tony Hale, “Veep” (HBO)

Keegan-Michael Key, “Key & Peele” (Comedy Central)

Matt Walsh, “Veep” (HBO)

Analyzing the field – At this point, we’re going to assume that Braugher and Burrell are out of the race, given that each one of their shows has been out for a little while. While Titus is a great character, we do think that “Kimmy Schmidt” was more at the peak of its buzz and popularity last year.

Who should win – To us, our heart for the performer goes to Key, given how amazingly funny he is in just about everything. The thing that we have to remind ourselves of at the moment here is that we’re looking at more the individual performance rather than overall body of work, and for the past year nobody was better than Louie Anderson in a role that brought him back to pop-culture prominent for the first time, at least to us, since he hosted “Family Feud.”

Who will win – We do think that the voters love a comeback story and Louie qualifies for that. However, we’re going to continue to lean on Tony Hale more as the voters’ safe pick, since they tend to recognize repeat winners time and time again in the Emmys more so than just about any other awards show out there. There’s little reason to think at present the tradition will change.
