‘The X Factor’ UK video: watch Samantha Lavery’s audition now!

The premiere of “The X Factor” UK is coming to ITV on Saturday, but the good news we’ve got for you now is that you don’t have to wait to watch a sneak peek!

In the video below, you can see the audition of Samantha Lavery, a 16-year old who is interested in stardom, and also in impressing her grandfather, who had to give up aspirations of being a singer in order to support his family. It’s a familiar story, but we like how the show handles it: You get a taste of it, but not a drawn-out package before getting into her performance.

What’s important here more so than the story is the voice, and luckily Samantha has a great one! She also doesn’t have the timidness that you tend to see from singers her age in the competition, who come in lacking confidence and acting as though this is a talent show that they first signed up for at school.

Samantha could last this season for quite some time. After all, we know that she is in many ways what Simon Cowell looks for: She’s young enough to have a career on the pop charts, and still has some room to grow. The one suggestion that we’d have for her in the event that she has Simon as a mentor is to emphasize getting a chance to do some current, uptempo numbers. One of the things that we think is hurting Louisa Johnson at the moment is that her reputation on the show was built mostly out of her doing slower ballads, things that inspire interest on the show but not as much on the radio.
