‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2: Show boss breaks down Nick’s addiction

Nick -

The second season of “Fear the Walking Dead” can be defined with several different things right now, whether it be aloneness, heartache, terror, or even purpose. The characters we’ve come to know have certainly learned more about themselves as a result of the zombie apocalypse, though at the same time have also figured out much more in terms of the true terrors of the world. This is a place that is harsh, cruel, and unforgiving, and sometimes you have to go your own path in order to determine where you’ve meant to be.

For the character of Nick, we certainly think that this is what he’s trying to do now in the wake of the midseason finale. Following what happened to Celia, he’s determined that his fascination with the dead is something he wants to pursue further, and this could lead him to an interesting place where he searches out a place where he can find like-minded people. It’s a journey that showrunner Dave Erickson previews further in a new interview with TVLine:

“When we get to the end of Episode 8 [the midseason premiere], we’ll see that he finds a place that I think enables him to a certain degree. He’s always had a very close relationship with death, largely because of the death of his own father. It’s almost like, from an emotional standpoint, this closeness to death is a way to try to reconnect with his father, so that’s something we touch on over the course of the back half. Then, strictly from an addictive standpoint, he likes being close to it because there is an adrenaline rush that comes from it. There is a logic to it. It’s a junkie logic, but it is a logic.”

The biggest thing that we’re certainly hoping for across this journey for Nick is that he learns that this is not what he wants out of his life, and that he realizes instead that there are other people who could care for him rather than seeing him as a tool for their own belief system. Sometimes, you have to take a few wrong terms before you realize that where you were meant to be was right in front of you all along.
