TV Friendships: Where could ‘Longmire’ season 5 take Walt, Henry?
Over the course of this month, we’re using the TV Friendships article series to look at some of the most interesting dynamics across the medium — and there are few that are better ones to examine that “Longmire” through the lens of its title character and Henry. The two have a tremendous rapport, and yet at the same time they’ve got secrets. They don’t always have shared interest, and that creates tension; yet, when they’re on the same page they’re as formidable as any other duo out there.
So where could this friendship go moving forward? That is one of many things we analyze below…
What they’ve been through – On season 4, there was a heck of a lot of lying going on, because because Henry was trying to keep his new-found alter ego as the new Hector a secret. We totally understood where he was coming from emotionally, but this secret put an enormous strain on the Walt – Henry friendship since the former, with the help of Cady, had been through so much in order to figure out a way to get him released during the third season. Walt wants the best for Henry, but at the same time Henry wants the best for more than Henry. These interests did not always align through the past batch of episodes, even if there is still common respect there.
Where they could go from here – We don’t necessarily want to keep seeing the same thing, with Henry continually keeping secrets and getting himself in potential legal. We’d like to see Henry work more alongside Mathias and the tribal police or as a valuable source of information for Walt. There are enough other adversaries in the world that having to do on the same page may be the best course of action for a united front. Not only that, but Lou Diamond Phillips and Robert Taylor have great on-screen chemistry, and we’d like to see more of them working together directly throughout the season.
Also, it wouldn’t hurt if the two characters got a chance to relax at some point during season 5 … though it’s not the show’s tendency to allow that for long.

I would love more Longmire/Standing Bear time. Their best moments have been when they were working together and had an innate understanding of each other. They both have great smiles, and I would love to see more of that as well. Each season has seemed to become a little more grim and I would like to see more humor as there is in the books.
Mathias working with Henry would also be gold – Matthias has a tough act to follow because of the corruption and Henry has a standing in the Cheyenne community that could be helpful if Mathias would dial back his dislike a little.
Hopefully Walt doesn’t cut off Henry because of his lies. He already accused Henry of running an escort service, for which Henry forgave him, so Walt owes him one. Cady, on the other hand, will understandably be pretty peeved at her godfather when she knows he lied to her face.
