Tonys 2016 suffer on-air gaffe with Michael Arden, Christopher Fitzgerald

Tony Awards -

Well, few awards shows ultimately go off without a hitch, and it is probably with that in mind that we cannot be enormously surprised by some of what we saw during the broadcast on Sunday with Michael Arden and Christopher Fitzgerald.

Ultimately, here’s what happened: The camera operator for CBS accidentally focused on the wrong name while announcing the nominees for Direction of a Musical; it was supposed to be on Arden for his work on “Spring Awakening,” and instead it gravitate itself over to actor Christopher Fitzgerald.

Clearly, someone informed Arden at some point during his time in the theater, given he tweeted out the following message during the show:

“You work your whole life to be on the Tony Awards and they show someone else when they call your name. Thanks CBS!”

Arden added that he “loves” Fitzgerald, so obviously he is not particularly upset at him over the slight.

Through most of the remainder of the night, we’ll give the show credit for keeping things tight, for keeping most of the acceptance speeches poignant, and also for providing some genuine entertainment at a time when the country really needs it, following an extremely tragic, shocking shooting that took place in Orlando at a nightclub overnight. The show did start with host James Corden addressing the tragedy, and then it was on with the show, which was dedicated to the victims.
