‘Supernatural’ season 11 finale reaction: The Mary Winchester surprise
Given the way most finales tend to go these days, there is a pretty predictable end for most Big Bads: They die. there’s also a pretty lengthy tradition of female characters on “Supernatural” dying. Therefore, by the transitive property of television in our head, it was fairly easy to assume that the same fate was going to await Amara at the end of the season 11 finale on Wednesday night.
Yet, that did not happen! What did instead was Amara and Chuck actually opting to make amends, and coming to a realization that there may be something more for them beyond tormenting this world. Technically, she is still out there in some form, so who knows where this particular story is going to go?
Perhaps for now, what people are going to be talking about more are a pair of huge cliffhangers that set the stage for season 12.
1. Mary Winchester is back! This was a reveal we weren’t expecting, especially with Dean finding her in the middle of the woods.
2. Sam was … shot? It seemed that way, as Lady Toni Bevel from the Men of Letters arrived and determined that at this point, it was best to take him in. Things went a little south when he resisted such demands. We know that Toni is going to be a major part of season 12, so expect this story in particular to linger for some time.
Was this the most shocking “Supernatural” finale in the show’s history? Even in spite of what we’ve said, probably not … but there was still quite a bit to enjoy, and a heck of a lot to look forward to.

I LOVED the difference! The best part of season 11 is how it has not followed the old trends overboard, and opted for something better. Waiting for the next season is going to be looong… But worth it already!

In a way, the ending was telegraphed. Not the Sam-Toni thing, I actually thought she was coming to help them. But the Mary returning bit? As soon as Amara said she wanted to give Dean what he wanted most, I began to think it was possible. I wonder, though, how much Mary knows? Does she have any knowledge from her time being dead and watching over her loved ones in heaven? Or is the last thing she remembers Azazel killing her?
