MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 5 finale: Show boss on season 6 hopes

Is tomorrow night’s “Awkward” finale the end of the season, or the end of the series altogether? It’s a fair question, but unfortunately one that we don’t have a real answer to at present. This isn’t a situation yet like “Faking It” where MTV has canceled the show already; however, at the same exact time the network hasn’t renewed the show either. We’re just in limbo, waiting to see what the firm decision is.

What co-showrunner Chris Alberghini said in an interview with TVLine setting up the finale is that even for them, they’re still trying to figure out what the network wants to do:

“We as the showrunners certainly believe there are plenty more stories left to tell, and we’re excited about the potential to do so … But we don’t control the fate of the show. It’s just a matter of MTV deciding what fits into their schedule next year and how many shows they’re going to have. We’re certainly interested, and most of the cast is interested.”

This statement does suggest that there could be one or two cast members looking to move on, but we’ll see what happens there. Really, so long as the core cast sticks around we’re happy, and also so long as there is compelling reason to keep Jenna Hamilton’s story going. We will continue to stress that the show really does need to give her and Matty some time in a relationship, since that is what many fans out there are probably looking to see.
