‘Legends of Tomorrow’ finale reaction: Show boss on Hourman – Justice Society of America decision

LegendsOn Thursday night’s season finale of “Legends of Tomorrow,” we had the debut of a character we certainly did not expect to see: Rex Tyler, otherwise known as Hourman. The character (who in the comics is granted finite abilities) has actually had a longtime fascination within the world of The CW, as years ago there were ideas about a show based on him. Bringing him on board here is ultimately the show giving itself an interesting tool to play with, since we’re sure there will be some differences between the character here and in the source material.

How did the decision to involve him come about? This is something that executive producer Phil Klemmer explained in a TVLine postmortem interview:

“It was basically based upon a conversation I had with [DC Comics CCO] Geoff Johns, where we were talking about the variety of different characters [Patrick J. Adams] could play. What’s cool about Patrick’s appearance is he’s not just appearing as Hourman but he’s also appearing as a member of the Justice Society of America. So for me, it was very much like, “OK, who’s a character that I associate with the JSA? Who can show up, say his name, and I go, ‘Ohhhh, JSA —that’s cool’?” Certainly, Hourman is a key member of the JSA, at least the version of the JSA that I hold near and dear.”

We’re not sure just how often we’re going to see Adams on the show, given his tie to “Suits” and how that will keep him busy. With that said, we love the twist, and we’re interested in seeing how long this plays out.
