Could ‘Supernatural’ season 12 produce a spin-off? CW head open to ideas

What's coming up? -

While there may not be anything set in stone at the moment regarding a “Supernatural” spin-off coming to The CW, the network’s programming head wants fans (and potentially those working on the show) to know that he’s open to ideas.

Per Variety, Mark Pedowitz said at the upfront presentation that they are “open to listening” another pitch about some sort of spin-off idea. The last one the show attempted was “Bloodlines,” which was by most accounts a major disappointment when the pilot episode aired. While it was created with the best of intentions, we do think that this episode showed more than any other the challenges that the network will have with creating something in this universe.

What’s the main issue? It comes down to capturing the tone of the writing (which combines, humor, action, and drama) with also casting the right people for the roles. Without Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, there is no “Supernatural,” and whoever is cast in the spin-off has to be of equal importance to their show. We’ve heard talk from fans about a female-led show (which we’d be behind), a prequel, or something featuring some minor characters from this universe.

Ultimately, if there ever is a new idea we imagine that we’ll start to hear more about it when it starts to get into the fall of this year or early 2017. There’s a lot of time to plan something like this out; it was only months ago that we first heard whispers of a “Blacklist” spin-off over at NBC.
