‘Dancing with the Stars 22’ retrospective: Doug Flutie, Karina Smirnoff say goodbye

Flutie -

It’s always a bummer to lose someone on “Dancing with the Stars” who genuinely wants to be there, and that’s something we certainly got from Doug Flutie. The football icon and his partner Karina Smirnoff were eliminated Monday night, and it came after he received yet again the lowest scores of the season.

So what’s Doug saying now about his exit? You can see both his response on Twitter below, and an exit interview he gave to “Access Hollywood.” Show co-host Erin Andrews had encouraged him to do it for some time, as the two have a working relationship in the sports world. We’re glad that he did. We were never the biggest football fan on the planet, but he was the sort of guy we always rooted for because he was such a massive underdog most of the time that he played.

We do hope Flutie inspires more legendary quarterbacks to appear on the show, mostly because this is one NFL position that really hasn’t gone all the way to the top yet. Before Doug, Kurt Warner was one of the most notable guys to take part. (Personally, we’d still love to see Brett Favre and his Wranglers hit the ballroom at some point.)

As for Karina Smirnoff, we’re sure that she will get another chance to take part in the show in the future, given the sheer number of times in which she’s done this so far and also her legacy on the show. We do hope, though, that her next partner is someone who has everything on paper to win. It feels like it’s been a while since she’s had a partner you could look at from the jump and label a favorite to win the whole competition.
