‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Pearl Mackie thanks everyone for well-wishes after Companion hire

Pearl -

It’s amazing how one “Doctor Who” announcement right in the middle of an offseason can dominate the news cycle. Then again, there really are only so many times that a new Companion is announced. (Think once every few years.) It’s a big event, even if it is someone who is relatively unknown like Pearl Mackie.

The more that we do think about it, the happier that we are that the show chose someone from relative obscurity for the role. She’ll have more of that fun underdog spirit that we like with this show around her, and we also think that fans will get a chance to really know her on the show. It alleviates some pre-show expectations from people who want to say that they somehow know better than the rest of the public in terms of whether or not she will be a good addition to the show.

If you look below, you can see Mackie’s social-media reaction to being named the new Companion, and another interesting part of this story is her quick rise in follower count. Basically, she has acquired more than 16,000 new followers in the time in which the announcement first came out.

Details are still relatively scarce about the character, other than that her name is Bill and that she seems to have a different personality than Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, or any other Companion who has been on the show in recent years. We’ll have more news as soon as it is announced, so stay tuned!
