Prince reportedly dead at 57; singer was icon on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ other shows

Prince -This is stunning. It’s hard to even know what else to say about it right now while our heads are still spinning.

Today, it first came out via a TMZ report that the legendary singer / musician has died at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota. He was 57 years old. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, he was known for his incredible performances and memorable numbers both in terms of live performances and recorded specials. We once had an opportunity to see him perform live in Toronto, Canada and words really can’t do his performance justice – it was an unforgettable experience.

One of our best memories of Prince from recent TV history comes just this past season on “Saturday Night Live,” when he and 3rdEyeGirl took to the stage for an epic eight-minute performance. It was a video that we were hoping to include in this article, but unfortunately NBC has made it unavailable at this time. (It likely expired at some point over the past year when it comes to rights.) Prince also performed an epic set at the afterparty to the 40th Anniversary Special, but that was not televised.

You can, however, see one of his other recent performances below from “Arsenio,” where he made appearances both on the original and revived version of the show. He also has one of the most memorable and excellent Super Bowl Halftime Show appearances of all time. Part of Prince’s star power as a performer is that he was the sort of person who knew how not to over-expose himself. He would go away for long stretches of time, and then whenever you did hear from him again in some capacity it would be with one of the most memorable and epic performances you could remember. He excelled at putting on a show, even if his increasingly private and reclusive ways made it very difficult for anyone to know the real him away from the stage.

Our thoughts are with all of Prince’s friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. (Photo: NBC.)
