‘Scorpion’ season 2, episode 18 review: Is Toby’s gambling going to cost him Happy’s love?

Scorpion TobyNow that Toby and Happy’s relationship is out in the open on “Scorpion” we expect it to have an effect on Walter and Paige who were previously using the whole “no work romances” as a shield against their own feelings. Will we start to see some of that tonight?

Tonight’s episode starts with a focus on Sylvester and his time on “The Price Is Right”. He gets chosen as a contestant and wins the first round with ease and moves onto the second round. He’s studied the products so well that he’s making his bids on items before Drew Carry can even finish talking and he wins $100,000 – a good  chunk of change to get a wing at the hospital named after Megan.

Toby is gambling a lot more then he normal, or at least more then Happy realized and while he says that it’s all under control, she is started to get concerned that it’s out of control. Are they getting ready to break these two up already? They only just came out about their relationship! The case of the week uses Toby’s gambling in a major way and it’s bringing up more and more red flags for Happy. She’s having a hard time thinking of Toby’s past of broken fingers, heavy debts and seedy apartments and the deeper they get into the case, the more Paige tries to remind Happy that this was Toby’s past, but not his present.

Eventually Happy asks to talk to Toby after he starts bragging about how his gambling past was a positive in the case. She tells him that she wants stability and she will not have the rug pulled out from under her again after everything she’s been through, but he tells her that his gambling is a shadow of what it was. When she still isn’t feeling secure, he takes out all of the gambling stubs he has on the go and burns them in front of her, saying that he’s never going to gamble again except on their love. Can he keep this promise?

We’ve seen this on many TV shows in the past: Once they have a happy couple out in the open with their romance the writers like to throw a wrench into it, but normally it’s not quite this fast. Luckily it makes a bit of sense with Happy and Toby because Happy has always had trouble putting her trust in someone else and is quick to jump ship at the first sign of a struggle. We loved that Toby was willing to give up his addiction for Happy and we just hope that he can keep this promise. Also, gorgeous performance from Jadyn Wong tonight. Episode grade: B+
