‘Gotham’ season 2 star joins John Lithgow, Sherri Shepherd in NBC comedy pilot

NBCIs someone about to check out of “Gotham,” and head over to a new NBC comedy? Depending on what happens in pilot season, it certainly seems possible.

For the time being, here is what we know. According to a new report coming in from Deadline, Nicholas D’Agosto has been cast as the lead for the pilot “The Trail,” where he will play a successful big-city lawyer who starts to investigate a small-town killing where a professor (John Lithgow) is a suspect. This show is meant to be a spoof of sorts for “Making a Murderer” and “The Jinx,” and you can read more about Sherri Shepherd’s role over at the link here.

This is a great chance for D’Agosto to shine in a lead role, especially since it is coming off of some interesting arcs that we feel could have used him way more than they have. “Gotham,” for example, had promoted him to a series regular before the start of the second season, but since that time he really has not been used very much. Meanwhile, he also had a memorable role for some time as Bill Masters’ co-worker / occasional Virginia Johnson love interest Ethan on Showtime’s “Masters of Sex.”

For the most part, we’re feeling really excited about this idea as a concept. It’s a novel idea, “Forever” creator Matt Miller is involved, and who wouldn’t want to jump at this cast? Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until later this season to see exactly what NBC decides to do here. They do need some more great comedies given the lack strong ratings that many of their current shows are generating.
