‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 6 preview: Shelagh, Dr. Turner’s trip goes terribly awry
Tonight’s new episode of “Call the Midwife” proved to be at times a somewhat-emotional affair on BBC One, and it looks as though moving into the next installment, this tradition is very much to continue. In particular, we’re continuing a trend this season of very bad things happening to the character of Dr. Turner, who has already had to navigate through some medical mistakes this season and realized head-on that smoking can be very hazardous to one’s health.
The synopsis below talks a little bit about Shelagh and Timothy’s attempts to cheer him up. Meanwhile, it also talks about some terrible atrocities against women that force characters into desperate situations:
“The world may be moving forward, but women are still labouring under the social pressure of shame. When prostitute Lizzie is too ashamed of social judgement to report a violent attack, it allows a dangerous man to go free and target others, including one attack which rocks Nonnatus House to its core. It’s shame that also makes mother Thora conceal her young daughter Diane’s pregnancy, afraid of the neighbourhood gossip and the impact on her future.
“After an especially busy period, Shelagh and Timothy secretly organise to take Dr Turner on a long-overdue family camping holiday, but a freak summer thunderstorm threatens to dampen their enthusiasm. Despite their best efforts, the holiday is cut short when Dr Turner realises his patients are at risk from the locum GP working in his absence.”
There are some times that we see a reflection of modern sensibilities in “Call the Midwife” synopses, and this is one of these said times when you think about what we’re going to see with the story of the attacks. Even to this day, many women are afraid to speak out because of fear of having their reputation attacked. Our hope remains that over time, there will be ways to end some of the stigma.
