‘The Flash’ season 2: How should we take ‘Supergirl’ tie-in?

Flash

During Tuesday night’s new episode of “The Flash,” there were a wide array of awesome moments … but one that caused our hair to stand up on end the very moment we saw it was the brief cameo of Supergirl as Barry, Cisco, and Harry traveled to Earth-2. We saw her much in the same way that we saw the 1990’s Flash (John Wesley Shipp) in the multiverse, or Killer Frost for the first time at the end of last season.

Obviously, this was meant first and foremost as an Easter egg and a reference to the fact that Grant Gustin is appearing on an episode of “Supergirl” coming up in late March. However, we want to think logically, as difficult as that may be at times for shows that feature superpowers. How in the world is it possible that The Flash and Supergirl can exist in the same universe? We certainly understand there being some questions out there all about this, and that’s what we want to try to theorize in this article.

1. Kara is on Earth-2, but not Earth-1 – Obviously this is the simplest theory, because it wouldn’t make sense for Kara and Kal-El to be on Earth-1 and we never heard about them until this episode. Maybe for whatever reason, these two heroes never made it to National City or Metropolis on Earth-1 … or they didn’t need to.

2. Kara is on a potential Earth-3 – We think that this is still a possibility as much as her being on Earth-2, given that we haven’t heard Harry or anyone else reference knowing or hearing about Supergirl, either. It seems like the sort of thing people would talk about, so maybe she is on a completely different universe altogether!

3. “Supergirl” is set in the future – We’ve started to explore time travel on “The Flash,” so we suppose it’s possible that this show is set a few years before Superman came into existence in Metropolis. We don’t think this is the likeliest explanation, though, since it would be hard to crossover any character other than Barry in the future.
