2016 Super Bowl commercials: Death Wish Coffee gets a small-business dream-come-true

Death Wish -Many companies try to use the Super Bowl as a chance to show their generosity or support for a certain cause. In the case of Intuit QuickBooks, they used their ad time this year to give something over to a small business in Death Wish Coffee.

Below, check out whether or not we think that this particular ad was worth the time and effort that the company put into it. Also, be sure to see some of the other commercials for the game here.

The idea – Basically, drinking some of this coffee is akin to having a fierce tempest in your mouth. It’s strong, powerful, and bold. The high caffeine content is particularly hyped up at the very end, along with the show’s very distinctive logo.

What works – More than anything else for this company, just getting the air time. We have zero doubt that they’re going to make a ton of money off of this ad, since everyone loves coffee and almost as many people love caffeine. It’s a product with a super-distinctive name that even people who are half-watching will remember. Even if people don’t remember the full name of the brand, Googling “death coffee” still brings you to it.

What doesn’t – We don’t actually think the company needed something this high-budget to show off exactly who they are. We would have went with something more scaled-back and funny, such as an innovative way to show how quickly drinking this gets you started for the day. If you don’t see anything other than the first 15 seconds of this ad, you have no idea what it’s advertising.

Overall Grade – C+. We think the product behind it looks great and we’re thrilled to see them get some love on the big game; we just wish the package around it was stronger and a little less high-budget.
