2016 Super Bowl Commercials: Heinz brings in the wiener dogs

Ketchup -Who doesn’t love ketchup? The majority of people do, and Heinz knows that. They also know that people really love dogs. There’s a reason that a bazillion people watch the Puppy Bowl every year, and that’s to see these animals in our favorite habitat.

Of course, it makes sense for Heinz to combine dogs and ketchup in a Super Bowl 50 commercial that, amazingly, has not been done now. It’s not necessarily hilarious, but it’seffective.

The idea – Basically, hot dogs need ketchup. This is represented by a whole pack of dachshunds wearing hot dog bun costumes running towards a group of people dressed like various Heinz condiments.

What works – Great song choice at the end of the ad, and great effects getting at least the illusion of a ton of wiener dogs running towards the ketchup. The faces of euphoria at the tail end of the video are all sorts of amazing, and we even love that the show is recognizing some of the other forms in which ketchup is served, including in those annoying glass bottles and the ketchup packet! Glorious all around.

What doesn’t – Technically, neither mustard nor BBQ sauce have any business at all being here, and yet, they are. Le sigh. Obviously, Heinz wants to show off their full lineup in hopes of getting people to buy into what they’re selling. (We still have no clue what most of those 57 varieties are.)

Overall Grade – A-. Given that we’re dealing with a product that really cannot go too edgy in their marketing, this is a really great, fun representation of the feeling Heinz wants you to have when enjoying some of their products.
