‘Saturday Night Live’ music: The 1975 performs ‘The Sound,’ ‘Love Me’

SNL -Tonight’s new episode of “Saturday Night Live” had many wonderful moments, with many of them led by a winning performance by Larry David as host.

As a matter of fact, Larry was so good that it was hard to envision taking a break for a long time to hear musical guests The 1975, a band we had admittedly never heard of before tonight. Luckily, it turned out that these guys also happened to be strong performers in their own right … albeit in a very different way. After being introduced by David and Bernie Sanders, the British rock band hit the stage to perform “The Sound,” an entertaining number that kept the uptempo spirit of the night alive. You could dance to it, and we feel like it was almost the perfect little intermission from the show. If this had been something slow and sappy, it could have killed the mood of the show.

We’re not super-familiar with this band, so we’re looking forward to hearing what they do next. We’ll be back with more updates on this particular subject soon. Update: The second song was entitled “Love Me,” and there was a serious Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe going on in between the way in which the band performed the song, the structure of the chords, and even the swagger of the lead singer. We thought that the first song was certainly catchier, but we understand that there is a lot to like for fans in this one, as wel.
