‘Call the Midwife’ season 5 continues solid ratings pace

Call the Midwife -

Just in case you were wondering if there was any slowing down “Call the Midwife,” it doesn’t really seem like it so far. The show has remained at the forefront of BBC’s ratings reports, and it will continue to do for quite some time.

The second episode of season 5 officially drew 7.8 million viewers Sunday night, which is a slightly decline from the premiere but still easily big enough to win the weekend in Britain. This defeats easily “The Voice UK,” “War and Peace,” and other popular series. Sure, the ratings are down so far versus season 4, but this is for the most part expected as there are more and more options available to viewers over time, plus also the notion that after season 2 or 3, it becomes very hard to acquire new viewers as opposed to losing some that you already have.

We’re not sure we’ll follow the ratings of the series week-to-week the rest of the way, mostly because we expect them to stay fairly steady unless there is some enormous event that takes place. This is the sort of show that occasionally does have a surprise or two up its sleeve, and when that happens maybe this will be something worth revisiting.

Really, we would argue that you are going to have to wait for a rather long time still to see the next significant ratings rival to “Call the Midwife”: “Britain’s Got Talent” could potentially draw higher ratings in its tenth season, but it will not premiere more than likely until after the Helen George series ends.
