‘Gotham’ season 2 spoilers: Ben McKenzie on Hugo Strange, possible villain revivals
Can monsters return to “Gotham” in one form or another? It’s something that the show clearly wants you to think about, based on some of the events that went down at the end of the season 2 fall finale.
For those who missed it (which is surprising since you are reading this article), here’s just a slice of what transpired: After killing Theo Galavan after a lengthy series of battles, the villain was eventually transferred over to Indian Hill. From here, we saw that Hugo Strange is clearly doing some sort of experimentation on the bodies of many dead criminals. This included seemingly Fish Mooney, given that you could see her signature hair in one of the capsules.
While Ben McKenzie was of course coy about whether or not specific people would be returning, he did tell TV Guide that the possibility of characters coming back as a result of this are high:
“You can always have second lives for characters in Gotham! There’s always the opportunity in Gotham for characters to re-emerge. But seriously, Hugo Strange is obviously in the mythology. His laboratory is really the breeding ground for the supervillains, as people who are already predisposed to crime of some nature become enhanced through his experimentation. They’re allowed to flourish in a new Gotham, and that will be a big part of the second half of this second season.”
We don’t really mind so much this show having a supernatural element, given that we have taken our time to get there. In general, we’re thrilled with the season 2 story as a whole so far. This feels so much more like the “Gotham” that we wanted to see from the beginning, since it is capturing the feel of the comics without desperately trying to feel like a series of Batman references stuck in a procedural package.
