‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ season 8 episode 1 review: Kandi’s pregnant, Cynthia in turmoil

It feels like forever since we last saw the ladies from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” but they are back in full force and while there are some changes that have happened since the last time we saw everyone, there is one thing that remains the same: Drama!

Let’s jump right in to our favorite part of the episode: Kandi and Todd are expecting their first child together! We saw them struggle last season with the first year marriage growing pains that many of us have, but they finally worked it all out and landed on the same page when it comes to having a baby. They were having some trouble conceiving naturally, but with some help from the doctors they were able to get pregnant.

We didn’t expect Phaedra and Porsha to become as close as they are, but after everything that happened with Apollo, Porsha stepped up as a friend. Phaedra has been handling things as well as she can on her own, but has kept up correspondence with Apollo and they are planning to get divorced. Porsha has met a man through social media who is quite a bit younger then her (he’s 24), and when we saw him on the show we understand why she’s so into him. He’s handsome and very attentive towards her.

Cynthia and Peter have had some troubles, but are still together. They only spend 3 days a week together since opening the new bar and then there’s also this video that circulated of Peter talking intimately in some woman’s ear and running his hand down her chest. Cynthia is embarrassed about the video and tells him that he needs to get himself in check for their reputations at least. When Cynthia talks to her sister about Peter, she tells Cynthia that she thinks that Peter is cheating on her. Cynthia also admits that she’s not physically attracted to Peter anymore, but that it’s not enough to end her marriage.

At Cynthia’s eye-wear launch party, Peter gets into a fight with Kenya over the video and we are a little surprised to see Peter acting so cavalier about it and making jokes about being with the girl in the video. We were also surprised to see Cynthia’s sister telling all of Cynthia’s business at the launch party to all of the women. To end the show we had Kenya’s new neighbor show up and the drama around her is that she has a house that’s been under renovations for years and Kenya is saying that this woman is broke and that’s why she hasn’t finished her house yet. Kenya is stirring the pot for no reason and while we normally love Kenya drama, we weren’t really sure why she wants to cause problems with the woman that lives next door.

If you were hoping for Nene in this episode, she was not part of it. In case you hadn’t heard, she wasn’t originally supposed to be part of this season, but it looks like she will be back in later episodes. As far as a premiere – this was a pretty great start to the season. We had updates on our ladies as well as some drama and that’s what we like about the Atlanta version of this show. It’s not all drama and fighting, there’s some positive moments too for us to celebrate. Episode grade: B+
