Crossover November: Could worlds collide for ‘Poldark,’ ‘Doctor Who’?

PoldarkWe admit that when cultivating all of the articles for our Crossover November series here at CarterMatt, we could have easily just done articles pairing up “Doctor Who” with everything. It’s just so easy, and the show has a basic construct where you can easily travel through time in space in a way that most other worlds can exist.

We’re limiting our Who-related crossovers mostly to other BBC shows, which is why today we come bearing this question: Is there anything at all that could be gained from a crossover between this show and the network’s current smash hit “Poldark“? Would it be fun, or really just rather annoying? That is something that we are prepared to investigate in a little more of an in-depth fashion.

The case for a crossover – It’d be a nice ratings boost to “Doctor Who” for one, but when you look beyond just the commercial applications of it, there is something to be said here for creating a sort of one-off, one that combines the two worlds without it being canon to the actual “Poldark” story. This of it almost like the “Downton Abbey” Christmas sketch that featured George Clooney. There is inevitably going to be a curiosity surrounding how a man like Ross would react to someone like The Doctor, and if there was a way a Time Lord could help with many of the problems of his life. Or, who knows? Maybe The Doctor needs Ross to liaise a problem that is happening in Cornwall that impacts the flow of history.

The case against a crossover – Unless you are doing like some sort of parody or non-canon sketch, there is utterly no way that this could work. Tonally “Poldark” is a very serious show, so how do you bring in something with a reputation for being more fun? Also, network executives and show producers would probably scoff at the idea of spending a lot of money and resources on something that would be fun fan service for a small group of people, but probably not worth the money or the time.

This is probably one of those that is best suited to be fanfiction; at this point, we’d say that even a “Who” – “Sherlock” crossover has a better chance. At least they both have Steven Moffat aboard.
