‘Community’ season 7 (in movie form) still possible, even after substantial Yahoo loss

It has been a while since we’ve written about the future of “Community,” with the major reason being simply that there has not been all that much to report.

Unfortunately, the news today is not all that great. It was revealed earlier this week (per TheWrap) during an earnings call from Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman that the comedy, which aired for NBC for five seasons before it was canceled, was a part of a massive $42 million loss. This show, coupled with “Sin City Saints” and “Other Space,” failed to make the money that the company projected to under their Yahoo Screen platform. With this, it is safe to probably write the company off for future canceled shows to get a second life.

Does this necessarily mean that the franchise and the six-seasons-and-a-movie prophecy is dead? Not necessarily. Sources tell Variety that there is a movie still in play, and it ultimately does not matter whether or not Yahoo is involved. Obviously, the biggest challenge at this point could be finding funding for the project. Maybe the show’s producers can find some sort of private funding for a movie that they can release or sell online, or maybe they will go more of the crowd-funding route.

Even if there is no more “Community” in the near future, we at least feel like the show had a tremendous six-year run that was capped off with a fun, emotional episode where Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) made it clear that he was finally okay with the fact that he was going to be the final member of the study group still at Greendale.
