Is Fox making ‘Dancing with the Stars’ minus the stars?

FoxWe feel like for many years now, there has been an intrigue to see what ordinary people could do in an environment similar to “Dancing with the Stars,” where they could enter the show with zero dance experience in an effort to see what happens both with the show, and ultimately with their lives as a whole.

What we have here ultimately is not news that Fox is basically taking the “Dancing with the Stars” template verbatim, but they are almost combining that format with “So You Think You Can Dance” and a few other original ideas for a new potential reality show. Per TVLine, the show from FremantleMedia North America (“American Idol”) will “highlight the lives of real-life couples who, each week, will participate in intensive training, rehearsals and live performances, until one couple is crowned the winner.” Therefore, you are basically pairing contestants with their real-life partners (no pro like in “DWTS”), but choreographing them with routines like what you see on Fox’s own dancing competition executive-produced by Nigel Lythgoe.

For those who truly want to see what it is like to see an ordinary couple start from nothing and learn to dance, this idea could be fun! However, at the same time it may be past the expiration date. Reality competitions as a whole now are facing an extreme uphill battle for relevancy, and the main issue from our vantage point is just that it is almost impossible to show viewers anything that is technically new. So much of it they have seen before in other forms, and each season has a typical crop of archetypes.

This show is still in the very early stages, so we cannot even say for certain that it will happen.
