Do ‘The Whispers’ finale ratings help season 2 renewal chances?

The WhispersThe season 1 finale of “The Whispers” aired on ABC Monday night, and while there was some significant movement forward for the story (specifically if you’re talking about the visitors and learning their true motivation), there may not be much of a chance to see what is going to be coming up next.

Let’s start here with the good news: The season 1 finale rose to a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. The bad news? That is not even remotely a good rating for network TV, even in the summer. We do think that ABC did not do the show any favors, sticking it after “After Paradise” the past several weeks. While that show has okay ratings for a low-budget aftershow, it’s a pretty terrible lead-in for a scripted science fiction show with a much bigger budget.

The ratings are one huge obstacle for the show having a future on ABC, but it is really not the only one. Another issue that the show is facing is that the contracts for many of the actors are already expired, and the studio would have to round everyone back together to get the show back on the air. The reason for the contracts ending when they did was because this show was originally planned to air during the 2014-15 season, but it was eventually delayed to the summer.

We imagine that we are going to hear more about the fate of many ABC summer shows, which also include another low-rated drama in “Mistresses,” a little bit later this year.
