Despite claims that everyone from season 1 of “Smash” would be staying put in the fall, we are now hearing otherwise — as a matter of fact, the sneaky Ellis and Karen’s cheating boyfriend Dev are both going to be gone pretty early on in season 2.
According to Entertainment Weekly, neither Raza Jaffrey or Jaime Cepero will be back as series regulars for the show’s second season, which is in many ways a response to mass criticism from fans and critics alike. Dev seemed to be perfectly fine until he inexplicably slept with Megyn Hilty’s Ivy, which was the straw that broke the camel’s back when it comes to watching characters cheat on each other pretty much all season. Meanwhile, Ellis was pretty much loathed from the get-go thanks to his scheming ways, which at times turned him into a melodramatic villain rather than an actual human being.
Ultimately, these changes by new showrunner Josh Safran seem to be more the fault of creative decisions in season 1 rather than any fault of the actors — we in particular feel for Cepero, who did the best job he could considering that he was given one of the most awful characters in TV to work with.
As we reported yesterday, there will be some new faces coming on board the musical drama — and they will likely fill the void left by these two. (Update: TVLine is now reporting that two other characters in Tom and Michael will see an incredibly reduced presence in season 2 — if they are around at all.)
