Ratings: ‘Bachelor in Paradise 2’ premiere clobbered by ‘Big Brother’

BP -Clearly, not everyone is all that eager to take a trip to paradise.

The season 2 premiere of “Bachelor in Paradise,” despite some hype and claims from the show’s producers that there could be a clue for the next “Bachelor” in it, drew just a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Sure, this aired in an unusual time and the ratings will probably go up a little tonight, but this is still a big drop from the 1.4 that last season’s premiere drew for ABC. The show was destroyed by “Big Brother 17,” which continued to be relatively consistent with every other episode and every other recent season.

So why is “Paradise” struggling to get the viewership? Our early guess here is that for the most part, you are saving the A-team for possible “Bachelor” or “Bachelorette” consideration. If you had people like an Andi, a Juan Pablo, or a runner-up like a Nick present in Paradise, you’d at least have some contestants who viewers were very familiar with. However, they barely remember people like a Kirk or a Dan. The women are slightly more memorable, but even still we’re not sure that there are any in here who we would consider A-listers for the franchise other than maybe Tenley at this point (and more recent viewers may not even know who she is).

Obviously, it is still early in the season, and the one thing we can say about “Bachelor in Paradise” especially is that this is a show that tends to bring in viewers in a very different way than other franchises do. Whether it is “The Bachelor” or even this show, audiences who watch the first episode tend to stick around, and sometimes the ratings even increase. Time will tell.
