‘Banshee’ season 4 to reportedly be the last on Cinemax

BansheeHave we reached the end of the road for “Banshee“? While Cinemax is not currently commenting one way or the other on the future of the show, it is starting to look very much like season 4 of the series is going to serve as its last.

As reported by TVLine, the producers of the show were told long in advance that they were approaching the final eight episodes, and with that they were able to craft some sort of fitting end. It’s sad for the show’s fans, but we don’t like to necessarily think of this as a “cancellation” in the sense that at least the show has the time to plot out a fitting end and didn’t have to scramble at the last second to put something together. We’ve always been a huge supporter of this kind of thinking since viewers that have invested this much time into a program deserve a proper ending to it.

We cannot say that we are necessarily that surprised about this being the end of the show’s run at this point, mostly because Cinemax has not yet really established a reputation for keeping any of their original shows around that long. They are still waiting for what we call the “killer app” that really gets people aboard their network. HBO had that with “The Sopranos,” while Showtime had “Dexter” and Starz is currently experiencing that with both “Power” and also “Outlander.” Note here that we’re talking more so about commercial success than whether or not a show is good; Cinemax has had several great series over the past few years, with “Banshee” being up there along with “The Knick.”

Hopefully, the cast and producers are going to get a chance to move on to some other exciting properties soon. Pilot season, after all, is going to be here before we know it.
