Could ‘The X Factor’ USA return? Fifth Harmony think it’s possible

The latest -What we have realized over the course of television history is that most things tend to be somewhat cyclical. For example, game shows were very popular during the 1960’s and 70’s, and then when on to make a comeback around the new millennium. Meanwhile, political dramas have come roaring back over the past five years, and for a time there were none that could measure up to “The West Wing.”

Now that the singing-show genre seems to be on the decline, is it possible that in due time it could rise up again? That’s something we wonder in the context of the American “X Factor.” At the time it aired, most Americans were already getting tired of the genre. There is already “American Idol” and “The Voice” on the air, not to mention “America’s Got Talent,” which also features singers. In a new interview with Digital Spy, Fifth Harmony (who are the most successful former “X Factor”) act suggests that the show could make some sort of comeback someday now that “American Idol” is ending, but also say that a new thing could eventually rise up and be the next big singing show.

If we were to play programmer here, it may be a combination of what the girl group suggests. We do think that an “X Factor” construct could work, but it would have to find a way to collaborate more with how young people take in music now: Via the internet, especially through YouTube. Don’t shy away from bringing in YouTube stars and have them use their channels to work alongside your show. There needs to be more awareness that this is how stars are found more so than they were a decade or so ago. Most singing shows today are becoming dated, and something needs to be done to shake things up.

Regardless of if “The X Factor” returns to America, hats off to Fifth Harmony, who are a success story now thanks mostly to the work that they’ve put in since the show rather than what they actually did during it.

If you missed it, the auditions for the British “X Factor” have been temporarily delayed. Read more on why here, and sign up to get some other TV news on all we cover, courtesy of our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: Fox.)
