‘True Detective’ season 2, episode 3 preview analysis: Could someone (else) die?

HBO logoTonight’s episode of “True Detective” is going to have a pair of separate challenges to take on. Not only does the series have to continue to take on what has already been a very intense case, but they also need to figure out at the same time how they are going to handle what happens next with Ray Velcoro.

Let’s assume for a minute that he actually is dead, and that we’re left the rest of the season with Frank, Ani, and Paul as the leads for the show. Is it possible that tonight’s episode could continue the bloodletting? After watching the preview below, it feels like the person you really should be the most worried about for the time being is Rachel McAdams’ character. After all, she is the one who is seemingly ruffling the most feathers, and if she is starting to unearth something, she may be targeted as a resulted.

Do we think that Frank has enemies? Definitely, but give his ties to almost everything and everyone in this world, we don’t feel like we have really unearthed this character’s true purpose just yet. Plus, if Colin Farrell is gone, you probably want to milk the rest of your star power as long as you can.

Now that we’ve said that, we are feeling reasonably confident at the moment that Ray will find a way to survive. “True Detective” is not “Game of Thrones,” and therefore the likelihood of them dispatching an important character so soon in the show is fairly low.
