‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Creator wishes audiences could see series finale on same day

What's up next? -The end of “Downton Abbey” on ITV is going to be upon us at the end of this year … but only if you live in Great Britain. Otherwise, you are going to most likely have to wait until later next year, when the series will air its final season in North America on PBS.

The delay of new episodes of the series is something that many viewers out there have shown a dislike towards for quite a while, but as a result of this, we really have not seen that much of a willingness from PBS to shake things up. Instead, this network has been a little more committed to the status quo than anything else, feeling as though the show’s ratings at this point really do speak for themselves and there’s no need to change something that is clearly not broken.

While it may not be a great deal of consolation right now, at least know that if creator Julian Fellowes had his way, everyone would be able to check out the show at the same time … or at least on the same day. Just take a look at what he had to say per Variety:

“If it was left to me, I would show them on the same day [in both countries]. The BBC with ‘Doctor Who’ showed that was possible. The possibility of spoilers in the eight hours’ difference is obviously considerably less than three months’ difference. I think it’s hard for people to resist the spoilers, and I wish they didn’t have to.”

Maybe this will change at some point down the road, but for some reason Masterpiece airings on PBS are always months after the fact. Just look at “Call the Midwife” or “Poldark,” which is airing this summer on PBS after a run on the BBC this spring.
