ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 debate: Should Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic face off against new Big Bad?
We’ve already heard that the upcoming season of “Castle” is going to be “different,” and we would expect almost nothing less given that you have two new showrunners aboard in Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter. While they each have history with the show already, they haven’t been in the driver’s seat until now. This is a chance for them to put a creative stamp on a show that for the most part a procedural, and that could at times be a little bit tricky.
So could one of the ways that they decide to do it be introducing us to a new villain? The show likes to play around with Big Bads in many forms, beginning of course with what we saw from Senator Bracken so many years ago, and then we’ve also had of course 3XK. The “Castle disappearing” story was a fun bit of mythology, but we wouldn’t consider that of the same variety.
If the show does want some sort of ruthless serial killer on the loose, it would be beneficial for them to create someone new. Jerry Tyson is dead, and while Bracken is still alive, it feels for now like he is in a place where he cannot cause anyone trouble.
While “Castle” has shown now that it can do character-specific mythology that is not just about casting a big killer, we would like to see some sort of season-long adversary at this point who turns up a few times throughout, and proves themselves to be a far more capable opponent than those Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic’s character typically faces. To us, the ultimately example of the great Big Bad is the Trinity Killer from “Dexter,” but this show will probably never get that serialized.
We should find out some more news on the future direction of “Castle” a little bit later this summer most likely, and we’ll have updates every step of the way. For now, answer the question we posed in the title via the attached poll!

Yes, there should be a baby! Castle love babies and Kate does too. Now that Captain Gate has been fired ( stupid move) Kate should be promoted to Captain! The story line has been set) S7 ep 6 “The Time Of Our Lives.” I don’t think the writers will write her into politics until the end of the series! It’s going to be interesting to see where the writers take the show in S8.

Here Marlowe and Co have hamstrung Winter/Hawley in their options for Beckett’s future vocations She will have to rise to the rank of Captain all other options have been eliminated. AWN & Co made her a lier on her tax returns for 15 years, as being single, also had three or four extra marital affairs , was suspended from the NYPD for conduct unbecoming an officer and was fired by Homeland Security for giving away classified information . The NYC press would have a field day, they would turn her run for political office into a circus.

Getting away from the case of the week is long overdue. That routine has been beaten to death. I to would like to see the show serialized. It would allow for more complex stories and more thorough relationships evolution.
This would make Beckett’s transition to captain more seamless and allow Castle to mentor Ryan on his budding writing career, and his own venture into serious literature.

I Want to see beckett have a baby.and for her to be captain.they can find something for castle in the precincit.and we need more romance with beckett and castle.and we need something like the 3xk.i am sure the writers will do great.but it is time for a caskett baby.

Again I do not like the sterile, limiting poll and will not vote. With regard to very bad criminals some are worse than others but even those are not very smart and can be caught.
Here’s one scenario that possibly fit a new direction of the series. Becket is promoted to Acting Captain to give her time to decide between Captain and Senator. Meanwhile she makes some personal appearances and stumping to get an indication of the job and her chances of winning. Meanwhile Castle contacts Josh and agrees to meet and work with him for a month in Africa while getting information with which to write an award winning story about him and his work. While Castle is away Becket confirms that she is pregnant. All of this should occur in the first one or two episodes to give the fans ample opportunity to enjoy later developments.
Again with regard to a big Bad to appear occasionally during the year did you not learn that fans get bored in the wait. Any such big bad should appear in one episode and dispatched in the next. Or, you should have some activity regarding him/her at least every other episode to prevent me from getting bored in the wait like I did in the Castle disappearance debacle and the wedding debacle.

Castle going to work with josh? Calling him? That wouldn’t suit him, or the story, or anything! They would need to work together too. If beckett is pregnant soon then also they won’t really be able to work on cases. And right now, she has to choose between Captain and the political job, not straightly senator, and that would also not suit. See all the things that don’t work are due to Castle and Beckett not working together.

The last time Castle and Josh talked , the doctor wanted to rip Castle’s head off. That meeting would end very badly if not tragically.Bad idea.

Agree but if they do they should have some activity regarding him about once a month to avoid being bored in the wait like I was when 3xk only appeared about every 3 to 4 years.

That’s the problem with stand alone episodes, The flow of a long arch is completely lost. Change the format and serialize season 8, let relationships and cases evolve organically and not try to ram a plot or relationship into 42 minutes.

I am not ready to see Beckett chasing a criminal down with a pregnancy belly!!! Too stressful. So I hope they hold off on baby news until late in 8. Could be a great season closing line: “Castle… we’re pregnant.”

You might remember that it was brought out that Becket did not drink her champagne at the Poe Pen awards as an indication that she might be pregnant. That was in May 2015. The last episode of season 8 will be in May 2016 – a very long pregnancy. You must know, too, that the captain of a precinct does not have to chase criminals but directs other detectives who do the actual chasing.

I am VERY sad that PJJ is not going to be around. She would have been great mentoring Beckett into captaincy, I wanted to learn more about her as a character, and they could have done something interesting with the “why” of her leaving as they did with Montgomery’s death (although I think she could be a recurring guest star with no harm done!)
If they had Beckett take on a captaincy at a NEW precinct and had her come back to the 12th that would somewhat echo her arc with DC. Not sure whether that would work.

Captains don’t usually do field work. Beckett’s expertise is in witness interviews and interrogation of suspects. These she can do in the office. Then there’s the Castle v. Beckett theorizing that we love so much!

Hence the problem with that entire story line. They should promote her to running a special task force dealing with the mafia and political corruption – not captain.
